News4 announces its 12 Days of Giving, focusing attention on 12 deserving charities and non-profits in our area.

Our newest 12 Days of Giving charity is ASHA for Women.


Tuesday, Dec. 18: ASHA for Women

Asha means "hope" in many South Asian languages, and for many local women, ASHA for Women means hope through empowerment.

The group provides community-based, culturally competent support to South Asian women living in abusive marriages and homes. ASHA offers guidance for navigating the government and community services available to victims of domestic violence. Each client is paired with an advocate with extensive knowledge about the financial, legal, and mental health needs of abuse victims.

Monday, Dec. 17: BORROMEO HOUSING

Borromeo Housing houses young mothers, and empowers them to create a positive future for themselves and their young children through education, counseling and support.

The Arlington, Va.-based non-profit closely monitors the infants of the young mothers to ensure the children are parented responsibly, receive appropriate medical care, and meet individual developmental benchmarks. BHI says it is determined to present two generations of at-risk youth with alternatives to the perils of neglect, poor education, and inter-generational poverty.

Friday, Dec. 14: FIRST BOOK

First Book is determined to see that all children, regardless of their economic conditions, can achieve more in school and in life through access to an ongoing supply of new books. They have provided more than 100 million new books to schools and programs serving children in need.

Thursday, Dec. 13: JOEY PIZZANO MEMORIAL FUND

The Joey Pizzano Memorial Fund is dedicated to improving the lives of children with special needs and their families. The fund honors the memory of Joey Pizzano, who touched many people's lives during his short six years of life.

Wednesday, Dec. 12: RED WIGGLER COMMUNITY FARM

The Red Wiggler Community Farm in Montgomery County provides gainful employment for adults with developmental disabilities through a horticulture program that uses organic agricultural practices. The program focuses on identifying and building on the capabilities of their employes.

Tuesday, Dec. 11: LOST DOG & CAT RESCUE FOUNDATION

The Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation is a non-profit animal rescue organization that saves the lives of thousands of homeless and abandoned pets each year. The group rescues animals facing euthanasia in overcrowded shelters, and places them for adoption in loving homes. Animals that are not adopted are free to live their lives at the foundation's ranch in Virginia.

Monday, Dec. 10: SHARE THE WARMTH COAT DRIVE

Share the Warmth -- sponsored by NBC4, the Salvation Army, Bergmann's Cleaning Inc., Burke & Herbert Bank and the Magnet Nurses of Georgetown University Hospital -- is collecting gently worn coats. Coats can be dropped off at participating Burke & Herbert Bank locations now through Dec. 17. The coats will be distributed throughout the region in  January.

Friday, Dec. 7: MUSICIANSHIP

MusicianShip is a nonprofit dedicated to helping children succeed through music. They provide music lessons, experiences and opportunities for under-served and at-risk youth through after-school programs, summer camps and other special events.

Thursday, Dec. 6: GIFTS FOR THE HOMELESS

Gifts for the Homeless is a D.C. nonprofit that donates new and used clothing to area soup kitchens, shelters, transitional homes, and other organizations. 

In operation since 1986, Gifts for the Homeless now serves over 70 DC organizations. The group runs a clothing drive each winter, and they collect money that they use to purchase clothing for people in shelters.
