- ATLANTA - The Braves send Kris Medlen to the mound in the NL wild-card game against the World Series champion Cardinals. St. Louis goes with 16-game winner Kyle Loshe. Game starts 5:07 p.m.

- ARLINGTON, Texas - The AL champion Rangers play the Orioles in a winner-take-all wild-card game. Texas, losers of nine of its last 13, starts Yu Darvish against Joe Saunders. Game starts 8:37 p.m.

- Lookahead stories to Saturday's two division series games: Athletics vs. Tigers at Detroit in the AL; Reds vs. Giants at San Francisco in the NL.

- WASHINGTON - Davey Johnson, 69, and Bryce Harper, 19, were born a half-century apart. Together, they helped the Washington Nationals build the best record in baseball in 2012.

- ST. LOUIS - The Rams have topped their victory total from 2011 with 11 games to go. In their latest win Thursday night, they sent Arizona to its first loss of the season.

- SALT LAKE CITY - Olympic speedskater Simon Cho admits tampering with a Canadian rival's skates under pressure from a coach during the 2011 World Team Championships in Poland.

- COLUMBIA, S.C. - No. 5 Georgia plays No. 6 South Carolina, and Bulldogs coach Mark Richt is not bothered by his team's defense, no matter how many yards it has given up this season.

- AUSTIN, Texas - Now it's No. 11 Texas' turn to try to stop quarterback Geno Smith. No. 8 West Virginia plays its first road game in the Big 12 with Smith the talk of college football.

- LAS VEGAS - Ryan Moore, coming off a 10-under 61, leads by a stroke entering second round of the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

- UNCASVILLE, Conn. - The Connecticut Sun and league MVP Tina Charles host Indiana and Tamika Catchings in the opening game of the WNBA's Eastern Conference finals. Game starts 8 p.m.
