An early lead for Tampa Bay turned into a complete blowout in Boston’s 12-2 win in Game 1 on Friday. The Rays will now look to their ace, David Price, to get them back into the series before it gets out of hand.
Price took a step back this season from his 2012 Cy Young campaign, and doesn’t have a great track record in the postseason. Price has taken the loss in each of his last three playoff starts and holds a 3.96 ERA overall in eight postseason games. He has, however, been great against the Red Sox this year. The lefty has a 2.48 ERA through 32 2/3 innings vs. Boston, a span of five starts.
John Lackey takes the mound for the Red Sox in what has been a renaissance year for the 34-year-old. After missing all of 2012 due to injury, Lackey pitched 189 1/3 innings this season and held a 3.52 ERA. He hasn’t been as fortunate this season against Tampa though, with nine earned runs in just ten innings vs. the club in their two season matchups.
Lackey has a strong history pitching in the playoffs back when he was with the Angels, but hasn’t played in the postseason since 2009. In 14 total playoff games Lackey sports a 3.12 ERA and won a World Series with his former club in 2002.
