New hitting coach Rick Schu joins Nats

Davey Johnson made it clear over the last few months that he was in former hitting coach Rick Eckstein's corner. Having worked closely together over the last three seasons, they hold a friendship and a strong rapport as coaches.

Johnson even said earlier this month, "if you fired him, you might as well fire me," while defending Eckstein.

So when Eckstein was eventually let go on Monday, Johnson and the Nationals confirmed the decision was that of general manager Mike Rizzo. Johnson disagreed with the move, but says it will have no effect on his relationship with Rizzo.

"He’s my boss," Johnson said. "I got the military mentality. He hands down the orders and I carry them out. I still have a great deal of respect for him. I think he’s one of the better GMs in all of baseball. We don’t have to always agree on everything."

It doesn't seem to be a major deal between the two, but perhaps something to watch moving forward this season, especially if the 48-51 Nationals continue to underachieve.
