Nationals pitching prospect Lucas Giolito has been promoted to the Class-A Auburn Doubledays to continue his 2013 season after a strong stint with the organization's affiliate in the Gulf Coast League.
Giolito, 19, is expected to debut with the Doubledays on Wednesday night against the Batavia Muckdogs, this according to Jeremy Houghtaling of the Auburn Citizen.
Giolito leaves the GCL with outstanding numbers through eight starts. He went 1-1 with a 2.78 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 22 2/3 innings. He is working his way back from having Tommy John surgery last August and the results have been good so far.
Houghtaling says the Doubledays expect Giolito to make three starts with the team. Their regular season schedule runs through Sept. 4.
Giolito was taken 16th overall in the first round of the 2012 MLB Draft by the Nationals. When they drafted him, they knew he had elbow problems and decided Tommy John was the best course of action. He has returned with impressive numbers this season and is on track to begin in Single-A next year.
