Every year the Mid-Atlantic region produces a fair share of MLB prospects, especially Virginia which boasts one of the best college baseball programs in the country in the University of Virginia Cavaliers. This year there is no Ryan Zimmerman or Danny Hultzen, a prospect projected as a top ten pick, but there is significant depth. The Commonwealth once again has plenty of potential draft picks with Maryland chipping in a few as well.
Here is a look at local products expected to be drafted with their rankings in Baseball America’s top 500 list:
From the state of Virginia:
34 - RHP Connor Jones – Great Bridge HS (Chesapeake, Va.)
Virginia’s 2013 Gatorade Player of the Year, Jones is committed to play for Brian O’Connor and the Cavaliers in Charlottesville. He’ll have to decide if he wants to go pro or to college.
54 – 3B Chad Pinder – Virginia Tech
Pinder is a versatile hitter with a .321 average, 11 home runs, and 62 RBI for the Hokies in his junior year.
103 – LHP Kyle Crockett – Virginia
Pinder’s teammate at Poquoson High School, the junior reliever has a 1.98 ERA through three seasons at UVa.
159 – RHP Alec Grosser – T.C. Williams HS (Alexandria, Va.)
Unknown to scouts before this season, Grosser made a name for himself in a travel team game in Georgia. He is 6-foot-4 and throws mid-90s heat.
196 – OF Ryan Cordell – Liberty
The 6-foot-3 outfielder played in all 65 of Liberty’s games this year and hit six home runs, 40 RBI, and led the team with 42 runs scored.
198 – 3B Andy McGuire – Madison HS (Vienna, Va.)
The 2013 Rawlings 1st Team All-American has been committed to play at Texas University since he was a sophomore and will likely be a Longhorn even if drafted.
293 – OF Tyler Horan – Virginia Tech
Horan led the Hokies with a .342 average and .603 slugging percentage, posting 11 homers and 50 RBI as a redshirt junior.
342 – LHP Austin Nicely – Spotswood HS (Penn Laird, Va.)
The 6-foot-2 lefty is committed to play for the University of Virginia. He was named a 2013 Rawlings 3rd Team All-American.
360 – RHP Jack Roberts – James River HS (Midlothian, Va.)
The Richmond-native is another University of Virginia commit. He is 6-foot-4, 200 pounds, and throws low to mid-90s.
From the state of Maryland:
138 – OF Matt McPhearson – Riverdale Baptist HS (Upper Marlboro, Md.)
A left-handed hitter known for his speed, McPhearson is committed to play at the University of Miami. The 5-foot-10 outfielder is originally from Columbia, Md.
492 – RHP Canaan Cropper – Bennett HS (Salisbury, Md.)
At 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, Cropper throws low 90s heat from the left side. He is committed to play for Ray Tanner at the University of South Carolina.
