The Nationals officially activated Ross Detwiler and Christian Garcia off the 60-day disabled list, required procedural moves that transfer both pitchers back onto the club’s 40-man roster for the offseason.
Detwiler dealt with a lingering back injury much of the season that ultimately was diagnosed as a herniated disc. The left-hander was limited to 13 starts, during which he went a disappointing 2-7 with a 4.04 ERA. He did rehab from the injury and appeared to be 100 percent healthy by early October, though he didn’t make it back in time to pitch in any big-league games before the Nationals’ season ended, leaving the 27-year-old a bit of a question mark entering 2014.
Garcia never did pitch in the major leagues this season, a frustrating one for the right-hander who impressed during his Sept. 2012 debut but was beset by forearm and hamstring injuries this year. The 28-year-old reliever appeared in 11 rehab games for three Nationals affiliates; he’s currently pitching for Hermosillo of the Mexican League, having tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings so far this winter.
The reinstatement of Detwiler and Garcia leaves the Nationals with a full, 40-man roster for the moment. They added Steven Souza over the weekend, protecting the power-hitting outfielder from next month’s Rule 5 draft and preventing him from becoming a minor-league free agent.
The Nationals also saw both Dan Haren and Chad Tracy officially become free agents after the World Series ended. They still have exclusive negotiating rights with both players and technically could make a $14.1 million qualifying offer to either before midnight but are not expected to do so in either case. Haren and Tracy, like all new MLB free agents will be allowed to start signing with other clubs at midnight.
