Williams: Nats want to make amends for 2013
At 21 years old, Bryce Harper is already a two-time All Star and has a NL Rookie of the Year trophy on his shelf. Now, as of Wednesday, he has a new honor.
Harper was named as one of Forbes' 30 under 30 for sports, along with 29 other young budding stars both on the field and behind the scenes. Among the other well known honorees are Kevin Durant (25), Maria Sharapova (26), Sidney Crosby (26), LeBron James (29) and Lionel Messi (26). The only other baseball player on the list is Mike Trout (22) of the Angels.
Forbes describes Harper's selection as follows:
Rising star continues to create major buzz -- he's popular in social media while pitching Toyota, UnderArmour and Geico. Harper's No. 34 Nationals jersey is one of baseball's top sellers.
There's no question Harper creates "major buzz," as they put it. The comment he made to a Toronto reporter in 2012, saying 'That's a clown question, bro,' became an internet sensation. It's still invoked today.
Few athletes have shown the news-making power Harper has demonstrated at such a young age. He's one of the first prodigies to grow up in the social media age and it's been fascinating to watch. He also turned 21 in October and has plenty of years ahead of him to make this list again.
