It may be time to cross the Nationals off the list of potential landing spots for Zack Greinke.

A new report from Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports suggests Washington is nearly out of the race completely. It is something many could have perhaps predicted from the start, but nonetheless his name had come up in the same sentence as the Nats in recent weeks.

Here is what Rosenthal said:

Source continues: Nationals did not scout Brewers' Greinke last night; appear on periphery at best. WhiteSox want Greinke badly. Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) July 25, 2012
The Nationals going after Greinke was thrown out there mainly because Washingtons ace, Stephen Strasburg, is expected to be shut down for the season in early September. But realistically, they dont have the trade chips they used to have in their farm system and a trade to get Greinke could deplete their young talent significantly.

The Brewers are said to be looking for a huge haul for their former Cy Young-winning ace and you cant really blame them. Greinke will be the most sought after free agent this offseason if he becomes available and any team who keeps him long-term will likely have to pay him a nine-digit deal. The Nationals have the money to offer a deal like that and some think Greinke would sign with the Nats, but they may not be able to afford a trade given what they coughed up for Gio Gonzalez in the winter.
