Though the Nationals and Braves were not able to play their game on Monday, Stephen Strasburg did manage to fit in a bullpen session at Nats Park to test the tightness in his right forearm.

Davey Johnson said the Nats’ starter felt no complications and is still on track to start Thursday against the Miami Marlins.

“He feels great. He wasn’t even picking up a ball, now he had a great 'pen and felt really good about it. It set him up for the 19th.”

Strasburg was scratched before his expected start against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night after feeling pain during his bullpen session while the team was in New York. He returned to Washington to be examined by Nats doctor Dr. Wiemi Douogiuh who prescribed a few days of rest and medication. On Sunday he played catch from 120 feet and felt fine afterwards.

Strasburg will be making his 29th start of the 2013 season against the Marlins on Thursday. Through 170 innings this year, he holds a 2.96 ERA with 181 strikeouts.

Desmond has tight hamstring

After discussing the good news on Strasburg, Johnson transitioned to some potential bad news. Ian Desmond has a tight hamstring that could prevent him from playing both games of the team’s doubleheader on Tuesday, and Johnson says it’s a concern.

“I’m more worried at this point about Desmond,” he said. “I hope he’s going to be all right.”

Desmond left Sunday’s game in the seventh inning as the Nats were well on their way to a win. He has only missed three games this season and has started all 146 he’s played in.

Even though Desmond hasn’t shown any signs of him being in pain on the field, it’s something he’s been dealing with for at least a few days.

“I think it’s been something he’s kind of been nursing,” Johnson said. “You can’t tell by the way he’s been running. He gets on base a lot and he’s out there for nine. Hopefully he’ll be all right.”

Johnson didn’t know which of Desmond’s hamstrings had tightened up, but did say he saw him “bundled up” on the training table before Tuesday’s doubleheader receiving treatment.
