Matt Williams talks baseball's offseason with Brian Mitchell
In signing Masahiro Tanaka, the New York Yankees are investing in what they hope is the perfect complement to C.C. Sabathia at the top of their rotation. They now have a strong one-two punch that could help them return to contender status.
But are Tanaka and Sabathia among the best one and two starter combinations in the league? Our friends at HardballTalk.com examined that subject this week, ranking the best starting pitching duos around baseball.
Tanaka and Sabathia didn't make the list, but Nationals starters Stephen Strasburg and Gio Gonzalez did. They came in fourth behind Cole Hamels and Cliff Lee of the Phillies, Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer of the Tigers, and Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke of the Dodgers.
HBT has high praise for the Nats' rotation, saying you could swap out Gio for either Jordan Zimmermann or Doug Fister and the Nationals would still probably show up in the top five.
Fourth, however, may start some debate among Nationals fans. Is that too high, or too low?
It isn't an exact science and statistical cases could be made either way. Regardless, it's a fun top to disucss.
