It's a mad, mad, mad NBA world right now. Waiting on LeBron James to pick a team already apparently has that affect.
How mad? Sunday saw fans and others from coast to coast tracking an airplane. Specifically the one belonging to Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert - and the one which made its way to South Florida on Sunday. The assumption? Gilbert was going to meet with the NBA's most coveted free agent in another attempt to woo James back to the organization he jilted four year ago.
First things first, here's the timeline.
First, a sport radio host in Cleveland alerted the masses that Gilbert's plane was headed to South Florida
Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert is currently en route to south Florida.— Joe Lull (@LullOnSports) July 6, 2014
Notice the mention says that Gilbert himself was onboard the plane. Well, the Cavs owner than responded Lee Corso style with a not-so-fast-my-friend reply
“. @LullOnSports:Cavs owner Dan Gilbert is currently en route to south Florida.” I am? Sorry folks but enjoying weather in my backyard today— Dan Gilbert (@cavsdan) July 6, 2014
Yeah, like that would slow the rampant speculation down. Nope, not even a little.
Yes, this is flight tracking information an apparently it's for Gilbert's plane (h/t mattmoorecbs)
And people think the most basketball madness takes place in March. Wow, so this is some craziness. Other rumored details included ex-Cav (and one-time Wizard for about 10 seconds) Zydrunas Illgauskas being on the plane with Gilbert. That assume Gilbert was actually on the flight himself, which he claims wasn't the case. Maybe the plane headed South and others with Cleveland's organization on board. Or not. Or who knows, because maybe we have lost out minds waiting for the four-time league MVP to decided where he's taking his talents next.
Or maybe we haven't. Later Sunday night came the following reports:
Cleveland has replaced Miami as my frontrunner to land LeBron James...— Chris Broussard (@Chris_Broussard) July 7, 2014
In pursuit of max slot for LeBron James, Cavs searching for team to take Nets' Marcus Thornton in deal to unload Jarrett Jack, sources say.— Adrian Wojnarowski (@WojYahooNBA) July 7, 2014
Apparently league insiders are on the scent of something epic: Ohio's own LeBron James returning home after famously making a decision to leave the Cavs for the Heat. A subsequent Chris Bosh rumor involving the Rockets only adds to the speculation. Or craziness, take your pick. Until James and his representatives tell us their plane, this is one big guessing game - apparently even for Bosh and Dwyane Wade-, but one with some juicy gossip. Yes, the key word is gossip.
These convos aren't sourced enough 4 me to report as fact. But I've heard enough to believe "the wind is blowing" LJ back home. We'll see...— Chris Broussard (@Chris_Broussard) July 7, 2014
Another report even later on Sunday night has LeBron and his agents meeting with the Heat this week. By the way, all these "Insider" reports were spit out within about 30 minutes of each other.
Jack Nicholson's character in "As Good As It Gets" stated to a neighbor, "Sell crazy someplace else, we're all stocked up here." For much of this afternoon, this quote seem to fit perfectly with the NBA world. By this evening, maybe not, but who knows, really.
Of course, if LeBron actually leaves the Heat for the Cavs and returns to play for the owner who wrote this, heads will truly explode from coast to coast.
