It took Otto Porter a month to give Marcin Gortat his bag back. They put up shots together at practice Wednesday, but it was the Wizards center who took the best one after praising the rookie's progress as he tries to return from a right hip flexor strain.

"We definitely need a guy off the bench who can come in, knock down some shots, give us a spark offensively energy-wise. We need that person. He's definitely a talent kid. His shot looks really good. He's made a lot of shots. He's looking really good. He could be the joker in the coach's sleeve. He might be the guy that come in here and help us win games off the bat as long as he can stay healthy.

"I'm laughing at him right now because his calf is the size of my wrist. He's got to put on some weight. He might get destroyed out there. He's so small, seriously."

Porter has yet to play after being taken No. 3 overall in June. It's an injury that Gortat has experienced.

"He's a good kid. He's got a bright future. I had some little problems with that, too, a few months ago," Gortat said. "It's a really tough, painful injury. I really hope he really healed that because if he's going to re-injure that part it's going to be really bad for him. It's better for him to take another week, two weeks off."

Back to the bag. Gortat was traded to D.C. just before the season tipped off Oct. 30. He didn't have transportation and relied on Nene to show him around initially. He had a bag with a lot of personal items and asked Porter, who had a car, if he could drop it off at Gortat's building.

"I didn't want to walk three blocks back to my apartment with this big bag dragging behind me. So I tell him ... just leave it at the front desk. Just bring it straight to my place and a month later I'm like hold up, 'My man, where's my bag?' He brought it back."

Fortunately, Porter hadn't worn any of his clothes.

"We ain't that good yet," Gortat said.
