Beal: Wizards 'lackadaisical' in loss to 76ers

WAKING UP with the Wizards after they blew a 14-point lead and surprisingly lost to the Philadelphia 76ers 109-102 in the home opener on Friday ...

So much for Bradley Beal taking his game to the next level two games into the regular season.

The Wizards (0-2) practiced Saturday morning and will leave later in the day to travel to the Miami Heat (1-2) for a game there Sunday (CSN, 6 p.m. ET).

If Beal doesn't find himself quickly, that could not only turn into three consecutive losses but a blowout.

"It sucks because in preseason I was making everything and now it's the total opposite," he said after going 4-for-18 in a home-opening loss to the 76ers on Friday. He's 10-for-36 in two games.

Backcourt mate John Wall carried the burden by making his first seven shots and finishing with 26 points, but Beal is supposed to be the scorer. Not the point guard.

"It happens in this league. When you're a scorer you're not going to be a great every night. I had a bad game in Detroit," said Wall. "I know he is going to come and keep getting his work in. We still believe in him and trust in him as our two-guard. He just got to keep shooting the ball. I know it's frustrating because he had a good preseason but we have 80 games left."

The lack of cohesion on offense is contaminating the defense of a team that was top 10 in fewest points allowed last season. The Wizards, who were the only non-playoff team among that group, allowed the 76ers to score 74 points in the paint.

"Get too caught up in other stuff in the game, and not making shots, not getting the ball, little petty stuff like that and that's what affects us on the other end," Beal said. "We didn't get back at all on defense. The offensive end, and us not having success on that end, affects our defense. It did and it shouldn't."
