The ability to finish through contact and while being contested has been something that was hard to quantify until recently.

But the NBA now uses SportVU, a player tracking technology which is accrued through cameras atop all 30 arenas. Each player's movement can be accounted for -- how fast he runs, how far, how much he dribbles, how many shots he contests defensively, touches per game, frontcourt touches, an opponent's field-goal percentage when player X is protecting the rim, etc. --  and even though it's early in the season Marcin Gortat has registered high in a key area.

Gortat, acquired in a trade with the Phoenix Suns just before the season tipped, is No. 1 in the NBA in finishing at the rim on contested shots, according to SportVU data.

On Monday night, NBA.com said: "No player in the league has been better at scoring on contested shots at the rim than Marcin Gortat."
