Throughout the NBA playoffs, we will highlight a new 2013 free agent playing on that given day while projecting a possible fit with the Wizards. Washington currently does not have significant salary cap space for any big-ticket items, but six players on the current roster will hit the open market this summer including Martell Webster, A.J. Price, Garrett Temple and Cartier Martin. Others still on the roster are potential trade candidates. Obviously re-signing some or all of the aforementioned free agents is an option, but those pieces won't solve all their needs. The Wizards have three draft picks, including a first round selection. However, whatever positives rookies might bring will not include NBA experience. That's why we want to know these free agents a little better...

Free agent: D.J. Augustin, PG, Indiana Pacers

Vitals: 6-foot-0, 180 lbs. Turns 26 in November

Stats: After four largely capable seasons with the Bobcats, Augustin went through a lengthy adjustment period in year one with the Pacers, though the former first-round selection is finding his rhythm during the playoffs. During a season in which he briefly fell out of the rotation early on, Augustin averaged 4.7 points, 2.2 assists and 16 minutes in 73 games. Rediscovered his 3-point touch from January thru March, sinking 41.3 percent of his attempts. Sank four from beyond the arc and scored 16 points in Sunday's road win over the Knicks.

Playoff Matchup: No. 3 seed in the East, the Pacers lead the Knicks 1-0 in their second-round series against the Knicks with Game 2 Monday night in New York.

The fit: Adept at running an offense, Augustin would take over the backup point guard behind John Wall and provide another perimeter threat off the bench. The players and coach Randy Wittman expressed a desire for veteran additions this offseason. Entering what would be his sixth season, Augustin would qualify as one, yet is still in what should be the prime of his career. On the other hand, adding him as top option behind Wall and Bradley Beal would eliminate any three-guard looks (unless that Beal growth spurt kicks in over the summer) which could prove important depending on how Washington's small forward rotation next season.

Chances of becoming a Wizard: Augustin earned $3.5 million this season with the Pacers. Odds are against him picking up that much scratch in 2013-14, though nabbing him for the bi-annual exception ($2.016 million) might be a stretch. Suggesting he would be a significant upgrade over Price, also a stretch (at least based on 2012-13 performance), though Augustin generated more production early in his career and arguably has greater upside. Never been the biggest fan of his game - at least in a starting capacity - but on the surface Augustin has the resume of a player the Wizards could target this offseason.
