Everyone realizes the Wizards want free agent Marcin Gortat back. The imposing center previously stated he's game for a return. Indeed, it's likely both sides find a way to make a deal work, but assuming anything is foolish when it comes to matters of money.

Should Gortat bolt, the Wizards might find it hard to land a true replacement as free agency does not include a deep class of centers. Therefore the team may have no choice but to target other bigs and use a center-by-committee approach which would include Nene and likely Kevin Seraphin.

Beyond that worst-case scenario, the Wizards still desire a perimeter-shooting forward who can also step in when Nene misses time.

Free agent: PF Josh McRoberts, Charlotte Hornets. Unrestricted.

2013-14 salary: $2.6 million

Vitals: 6'10", 240 pounds. 27 years old.

Career averages: 5.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 47.6% FG, 34.2% 3FG. Last season: 8.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 43.6% FG, 36.1% 3FG

The fit: After bouncing around the NBA for six seasons, McRoberts found a home in Charlotte and delivered his most well-rounded campaign. Playing alongside center Al Jefferson, he started a career-high 78 games this season. Though not a dynamic rebounder despite his size, McRoberts is a strong passer and not just for a big man. Factor in his touch from distance and he would make for a solid option behind Nene and Gortat.

Chances of becoming a Wizard: Set to make $2.7 million next season, McRoberts opted out of the final year of his contract. All indications suggest Charlotte, like Washington, wants to keep together the core that reached the postseason last season. Of course the Bobcats also gave themselves a hedge by drafting Indiana power forward Noah Vonleh with the ninth overall pick. Should McRoberts stay with the Bobcats, McRoberts he the starter. That alone likely tips the scales toward staying put. Unless Gortat does indeed bolt, the ex-Dukie would be no better then the third big man in Washington.
