Randy Wittman could only get two words out before the third one cost him $20,000.

"Commitment to (expletive) playing defense," he lamented after his Wizards allowed 35 points and 65.2 percent shooting in the fourth quarter of a loss in their home opener to the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday.

Rod Thorn, president of basketball operations for the league, announced its fine Monday after he made the remarks at his postgame news conference that was televised live locally, including on CSN.

The Wizards are 0-3 and have the day off after falling to the Miami Heat on Sunday. They return to practice at Verizon Center on Tuesday.
