Forgive Nene if he sounds like he's quoting lines from Jerry Maguire. He can't help it when talking about Marcin Gortat, who he excelled with in the low post in their first season together with the Wizards.
Nene hopes it wasn't the last. Gortat, an unrestricted free agent, sounds like he wants to come back, the team has been trying to convince him to stay but it's far from a foregone conclusion.
"Our relationship is good," Nene said. "We don't need to hang out outside the court but we understand each other. They work with me and Marcin. I hope we sign him. He's a good player. He completes me. ... On the court. Let me explain.
"Hopefully he does the right thing."
Gortat came over in a trade from the Phoenix Suns just days before the 2013-14 season began. Nene had been used to playing with Emeka Okafor, who was sent out after a herniated disk in his neck ruined the plan.
Gortat was more than Nene had expected. They created more space for each other as defenses had to extend to guard Nene and Gortat flourished running the pick-and-roll with John Wall and 37 double-doubles.
