Marcin Gortat tip-slam rocks Atlanta
League-wide point differential data puts a numeric spin on the impressive production from John Wall and Marcin Gortat this season
The same data illustrates the Wizards lack of depth heading into back-to-back games starting with the Atlanta Hawks on Friday night.
NBA.com put together a top 10 list of players who have the largest point differential when they're on or off the court. The offensive rating (team points per 100 possessions) sample size is at least 300 minutes on court.
In 755 minutes with Wall on the court, the Wizards have a 104.6 offensive rating. In 230 minutes without the playmaking point guard, just 83.9. The difference of 20.6 is the NBA's third greatest behind only Golden State's Stephen Curry (25.5) and Minnesota's Kevin Love (23.5). Gortat (14.9) ranks sixth.
Now take a closer look at the list. There are two Wizards, two Timberwolves and three Warriors. Not coincidently, those three teams rank 30th, 29th and 28th respectively in bench scoring.
Injuries have certainly been part of the issue for the Wizards. Bradley Beal, Nene, Martell Webster have all missed multiple games. Same with Al Harrington, who will be out at least another month. Rookie Otto Porter only recently joined his teammates on the court.
There is another factor, as NBA.com's John Schuhmann notes:
The presence of three Warriors in the top 10 further illustrates their lack of depth. Also in the top 10 are two Wizards, and when you take defense into account, John Wall has the largest on-off-court NetRtg differential. Washington has outscored its opponents by 5.6 points per 100 possessions with Wall on the floor and has been outscored by 24.1 with him on the bench. That Eric Maynor addition hasn’t worked out too well.
The Wizards rank last in bench scoring (18.6) and minutes (13.4) This isn't a chicken and the egg situation. Few offensive weapons and way too many injuries consistently leads to head coach Randy Wittman keeping his starters on the court longer.
At least somebody believes the best of Maynor is coming soon. That would hurt Wall's rating. Talk about addition by subtraction.
