The reports have been out there for weeks, but on Monday USA basketball confirmed John Wall has been chosen as a member of the U.S. select team. The Wizards point guard will be among 13 players training against the U.S. men's Olympic team in Las Vegas from July 6-12. Joining Wall on the team include reigning Rooke of the Year Kyrie Irving (Cavaliers), Ryan Anderson (Magic), DeMarcus Cousins (Kings), Paul George (Pacers), Kawhi Leonard (Spurs), Jeremy Lin (Knicks) and Klay Thompson (Warriors).Participating on the select team could give Wall and others an inside track toward playing on future U.S. world championship or Olympic teams. In the short-term, the opportunity allows him topractice against the likes of Chris Paul and Russell Westbrook.
Random thoughts: Leonard and Thompson were both selected after Jan Vesely, the sixth pick in the 2011 NBA Draft. Obviously the Czech native could not be a member of the U.S. program and the leaping Vesely's positive aspects are worthy of upside talk. Still, worth noting. Interesting to note that Blair, the onlyformer second-round pick on the team anda player many Wizards fans wanted the team to draft in 2010, played only three minutes total during the Spurs four-game sweep of the Clippers. Lin is indeed the only non-drafted player on the roster.
