Wizards visit St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis
Rather than hold a scheduled practice while in Memphis last week, Washington Head Coach Randy Wittman felt it might be more beneficial for the squad to use their time with a visit to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Every member of the Wizards team and coaching staff, along with Vice President of Basketball Administration Tommy Sheppard, Public Relations Director Scott Hall and Comcast SportsNet's Steve Buckhantz toured the famed hospital.
The smiles on the faces, the level of appreciation and the spirits raised were evident from the start. And that was just from the players.
Children and their parents came from everywhere to see these larger than life stars.
Wizards center Nene was especially moved by the visit. It was just five years ago Nene fought a personal battle with testicular cancer, and won. He was emotional as he passed by the various treatment rooms and shared stories of how it reminded him of how the disease knows no age, background or social status.
The day was capped off by a five year old patient who showed up for treatment, wearing her John Wall Wizards jersey, the one she wears for every treatment. Little did she know she would meet her hero and pose for a picture with the Wizards star.
Clearly a moment she will never forget, nor will Wall.
