D.C. United today announced that the club has acquired defender James Riley from Chivas USA in exchange for a 2015 second round Supplemental Draft pick.
“We are excited to be adding a quality defender in James,” said D.C. United General Manager Dave Kasper. “James has over 200 games played in MLS, and his experience will help solidify our backline.”
Last season, Riley tied Dan Kennedy for most minutes played (2,880) at Chivas USA (32 games played/games started). In his eight year MLS career, Riley has racked up 17,401 minutes, tallied two goals, and added 16 assists.
Riley, a Colorado Springs, Colorado native, was drafted by the New England Revolution as the 21st overall pick of the 2005 MLS SuperDraft and in his first year as a professional, he appeared in 23 games (12 starts). Since then, Riley has played with the San Jose Earthquakes, Seattle Sounders FC, and Chivas USA where he was a regular for all three. During his time with Seattle Sounders FC, Riley helped lead the team to three consecutive Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups. Riley has played over 2,000 minutes every year since 2006.
