U.S. Soccer has announced the third-round pairings for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. D.C. United will play the winner of Richmond Kickers-Icon FC on Tuesday, May 28.
D.C. United has not yet played in this years tournament as all Division I teams receive a bye to the third round.
The Kickers will host Icon FC at Richmond City Stadium on Tuesday, May 21 at 7 p.m. ET. If Icon FC advances, D.C. United would host them at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, MD. If Richmond wins, the Kickers would host in Richmond.
Richmond of course is D.C. United’s USL PRO affiliate with five Black-and-Red players – Andrew Dykstra, Taylor Kemp, Michael Seaton, Conor Shanosky, and Casey Townsend – currently on the roster on loan. While D.C. United can recall these players at any time for MLS play, if any of them play minutes for Richmond in the U.S. Open, they will be tied to Richmond for the remainder of cup-play.
D.C. United has won the U.S. Open Cup twice, including a ‘double’ championship year in 1996 in which they won both the Open Cup and the MLS Cup. The 2013 tournament features 68 teams, making it the largest field in the modern era (1995-present). This year also marks the second-consecutive year in which all U.S.-based Division I, II and III teams will participate.
