Christian Fernandez Salas, or Christian for short, comes to D.C. United on a free transfer after he was released from Almeria of La Liga (the top division) in Spain. The addition of Christian means United will have a completely new backline in 2014. United had already added Jeff Parke and Bobby Boswell in the center, and Sean Franklin on the right.
After the disappointing season in 2013, United have made a concerted effort to improve everywhere -- a tall task, but one it looks they have accomplished.
So what of Christian?
Well, he was a player that came up through the Santander system in Spain and began playing with their youth team, worked up to their 'B' team before finally breaking through with their senior club. In 2012 he transferred to Almeria and helped them gain promotion to La Liga.
His six goals in 2012-13 came mostly off set pieces, which in addition to all the other players United added, can only be of more help. However, in his five matches for Almeria this year he was sent off early in two of them for accumulating two yellow cards.
He should immediately start for the black-and-red and would provide an upgrade over Chris Korb or Taylor Kemp. At 28, he's still somewhat in his prime in soccer terms and should be able to come in and contribute immediately.
