On Saturday evening, Major League Soccer announced that D.C. United goalkeeper Bill Hamid had been selected to the MLS All-Star Team. The team will play defending Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in a friendly on August the 6th at Provience Park in Portland, Oregon. The match will be shown live at 8pm EST on ESPN.
Hamid will serve as the primary backup for starting goalkeeper Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake). Starters for the All-Star game are determined by the fans, while reserves are selected by Portland Timbers head coach Caleb Porter and MLS Commissioner Don Garber, who selected two players. While there were certainly many worthy candidates for the position, Hamid stood out among the likes of Clint Irwin (Colorado Rapids,) Stefan Frei (Seattle Sounders,) Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire,) and Eric Kronberg (Sporting Kansas City) for his clear improvements this season.
