Maryland's backup plan for a potential starting point guard didn't work.
Memphis guard and Baltimore native Antonio Barton will transfer to the University of Tennessee, according to the Twitter account belonging to his brother Will, a member of the Portland Trailblazers.
Barton (Lake Clifton High School and Notre Dame Prep) played for three years at Memphis before deciding to change schools as a graduate transfer. The 6-foot-2 guard will be eligible immediately for the Volunteers.
Even though Barton's production and minutes dropped during his three seasons with Memphis, averaging under 17 minutes and less than six per game last season, the Terps could use a veteran presence at point guard. He visited the College Park campus earlier in May.
Point guard Pe'Shon Howard decided to transfer earlier in the offseason, leaving an uncertain mix behind. Sophomore Seth Allen is the only guard on the roster with ball-handling experience, but the sophomore is not a natural point guard. Same goes for junior swingman Nick Faust, who has also run point for the Terps. Incoming freshman Roddy Peters is a highly touted point guard prospect, but is coming off an injury.
