The Bronko Nagurski Trophy Preseason Watch List was released on Thursday and defensive back Kendall Fuller and defensive tackle Luther Maddy were among those listed as players to watch for the award honoring the nation’s top defensive player.
The Hokies accounted for two of the 12 ACC players named to the list.
Fuller made an impact in 2013, his freshman year, starting 12 of 13 games. The Baltimore native made 58 tackles and caught six interceptions on his way to being named the ACC’s defensive rookie of the year. He was also a second-team All-ACC selection.
Maddy started off his junior season with four tackles, two for a loss, and a sack against Alabama. He remained a consistent pass threat throughout the season finishing with 6.5 sacks. He was also named to the Outland Trophy watch list, an award that honors the best interior lineman. Clearly expectations are high for the senior tackle.
Both players were also named to the Bednarik Award watch list on Monday. The Bednarik also recognizes the best defensive player in the country.
With question marks on offense at almost every key position, the Hokies are expected to lean heavily on their defense this season. Both Fuller and Maddy will play a major part in whatever success Virginia Tech can manage on the year.
The Hokies wil kickoff their season on August 30 against William & Mary before traveling to Columbus to take on Ohio State.
