The agent for Auburn quarterback Cam Newton has confirmed that he will visit the Washington Redskins next month about two weeks prior to the April 28 NFL draft. Newton, the Heisman Trophy winner of the BCS champion Tigers, is rated as one of the top two quarterbacks in the draft. He and Blaine Gabbert of Missouri are vying to be the top quarterback selected. The visit does not mean that the Redskins are going to draft Newton. It seems entirely likely that they will not have a chance to do so as he is likely to be taken by one of the nine teams drafting before them. Of those nine teams, at least six have needs at quarterback ranging from serious to critical. As expected, Mike Shanahan would not confirm the visit of Newton or of any other prospect when he spoke to the Washington Post earlier this week. We dont discuss those things, for obvious reasons, Shanahan said. But well have a number of players in for visits, and go to a places for some private workouts. At times, it may be best to look at Shanahan doesnt interview to get a clue as to who he might draft, especially in the first round. In 1996 he didnt bring in John Mobley to the Broncos facility but that didnt stop him from taking the Kutztown linebacker with the 15th pick. He used similar subterfuge in 2006 when he did not interview or work out quarterback Jay Cutler prior to taking him 11th overall.
