Throughout the night I kept wondering how many times the Caps would fight their way back from one goal deficits against the Rangers. The answer was all night long. The visitors battled to the very end this evening and when Brooks Laich hit the empty net with six seconds left, they let out a jubilant roar.Washington played an action-packed, energy charged game, but costly blunders forced them to play catch-up for most of the contest. Brian Boyle cashed in twice for New York off broken plays in the first period. Those two goals were sandwiched around a nice power play deflection that landed Laich on the score sheet for the Caps. The goal scorers to start the second period were two unlikely characters showing off their booming slapshots. I was surprised to see John Erskine blow one past Rangers star goalie Henrik Lundqvist. King Henrik has benn fantastic over his last seven games for the Rangers, but wasn't at his stingy best tonight. If I was surprised when Erskine scored, I was downright amazed to see Derek Boogaard race down the wing and unload a slapshot that beat Michal Neuvirth cleanly to the short side. The big guy hadn't scored in forever, or since 2007 to be specific. The Caps would not be fazed. Alex Ovechkin made a mad dash from one end of the rink to the other. His initial shot was stopped, but the bounce went right to Mike Knuble, who ended a long drought for himself to tie the score at 3.The game would be won in the third period and the Caps had more willpower. It was a physical contest so it was fitting that the combination of Matt Hendricks and Matt Bradley teamed up on the winner. Bradley's backhand pass in traffic was a beauty for Hendricks to deposit by Lundqvist. The win streak is five games and counting as the big club comes home to face a much improved Tampa Bay team Thursday. That will be an interesting night on CSN.
