Bruce Boudreau said he hopes the NHL reviews a head shot on defenseman Mike Green that occurred during the Capitals 3-2 loss to the New York Rangers Sunday.

Green has played three games since missing much of the regular seasons second half with a concussion.

The play in question came during Alex Ovechkins goal late in the second period. Green received the puck in the right circle and lost it while trying to pirouette. At the same instant, Rangers defenseman Marc Staal delivered an elbowforearm shiver to the back of Greens head.

Green hit the ice grabbing his head but was on his feet after Ovechkins goal and led all Capitals skaters with 22:52 of ice time.

It was a dirty shot, Boudreau said after the Capitals optional skate on Monday. I hope the league looks at. Im listening to all the experts last night on the Raffi Torres of Vancouver hit on Chicagos Brent Seabrook, and theyre all saying, Theres no puck. Its not a hockey play. The guy is in a vulnerable position, and he hits the head.

Staal comes in, theres no puck and he takes his arm and swings at his head. Its all forgotten because we score a goal to tie the game up. It shouldnt be forgotten, and it wasnt the only time they targeted Mikes head. Thats what we want to get out of the game.

Some analysts suggest Torres may escape a suspension because of leeway afforded behind the net and how defensemen should expect contact. (Updated 1:51 p.m.: Canada's TSN is reporting that Torres will not be suspended).

Green was in the slot, and it was blindside to boot because he had lost control of the puck on the spin move and looking behind him and the hit was still there, Boudreau said.

Boudreaus comments were the first bit of gamesmanship of the series, which the Capitals lead 2-1 entering Wednesdays Game 4 in New York.

Theyre coming after him, Boudreau said of Green. Brandon Prust left his feet in the first period and went after the head as well, and Mike threw a punch back at him.

The Rangers statistics crew liberally credited the home team with 41 hits on Sunday.

I have no problem with hitting lets hit as hard as we can, Boudreau said. Thats what this game is all about. But you cannot target the head.
