Capitals general manager George McPhee was secretive about Mike Greens whereabouts but confirmed on Wednesday that the All-Star defenseman will not require surgery to repair what is believed to be persistent problems with his groin.
No, McPhee said. They ruled that out.
Its not worse than we already knew, and he has been making progress. Were just trying to expedite things. Well know more based on the treatments hes getting.
Asked if Green saw a groin specialist, McPhee said, Not necessarily.
McPhee said Green would join the team in Colorado, where the Capitals will play the Avalanche on Saturday, but could not give a timetable on his return to the lineup.
Hes working on it, McPhee said. We dont know if it will make a difference, but well see.
Green first injured his groin on Nov. 11 when he was checked hard into the boards by Devils forward Ryan Carter.
He has not skated since Thursday, Dec. 8 and has missed the past 15 games and 21 of the Capitals 29 games this season.
He would make progress, then plateau, McPhee said. Make progress then plateau. Were just trying to see if we can just get him over the final hill. I dont know a lot right now. Ill know more in a couple days.
The Caps are 8-0 with Green in the lineup and 7-13-1 without him..
