Once the week of the NFL Combine arrived and there had been no decision on the status of Peyton Manning it was widely assumed that we would learn nothing new about it this week. For once, the conventional wisdom has held up, at least through the first day of the combine.
Colts General Manager Ryan Grigson deflected questions about Manning. "I'm here to focus on the Combine. I can't talk about Peyton's medical status right now, he said. Grigson walked into the Manning firestorm cold as he was hired to replace Bill Polian just over a month ago.
"We're still working to getting that resolved, Grigson said of the situation.
Mike Chappell, who has been a Colts beat writer since they arrived in Indy, knows the situation as well as anyone. He tweeted the following:
"After listening to Ryan GrigsonColts head coach Chuck Pagano, it's crystal clear Jim Irsay will determine 18's fate in Indy. But we knew that."
So the elephant wearing jersey No. 18 remains in Lucas Oil Stadium, and it doesnt look like he will be leaving before the Combine ends next Tuesday. Irsay must decide whether he should exercise a 28 million option in Mannings contract to keep him on the team.
