Could the Capitals wind up facing Chris Pronger in the playoffs after all?

One day after Philadelphia Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren announced that their menacing defenseman would miss the rest of the regular season and Stanley Cup playoffs due to severe concussion symptoms, they backtracked by saying Pronger would be re-evaluated in the months ahead.

Well cross that bridge when we come to it, Holmgren said when asked what path the Flyers would take if Pronger is symptom free heading into the playoffs. I think right now Chris is not an option. If he gets better somewhere over the next month (or) months, well address that when we get there.

So, why would the Flyers say Pronger is out for the season one day and waffle the next?

Because Holmgren does not want his players looking over their shoulders all season waiting for their captains return. That happened during the 2006-07 season when Flyers captain Peter Forsberg was in and out of the lineup with persistent foot problems.

Holmgren wants some permanency in his locker room and by eliminating Pronger from the equation he hopes to send home the point that his team will need to win without him.

Hopefully, the Capitals have nit yet reached that point with Mike Green, who has been sidelined since Nov. 11 with a significant groin injury and means as much to his club as Pronger means to Philadelphia.
