Cody Eakin was midway through answering a question from a reporter when Alex Ovechkin swooped in from behind with a towel filled with blue gel shaving cream.

Before he knew it, the red-headed Capitals rookie was wiping foam from his eyes, nose, ears and mouth.

Too bad they dont carry cans of whipped cream in hockey dressing rooms. Maybe then rookies would savor the taste of scoring their first career goals.

Eakin certainly enjoyed his, which came in just his second NHL game.

I dont think theres a better feeling than getting that one tonight, Eakin said just before getting the shaving cream pie treatment. Im pretty happy right now.

My time here so far has been memorable and Ill remember this.

Eakins first NHL goal came 10:49 into the third period when he followed Alex Semin up the ice on a 2-on-1 and snapped Semins feed over the blocker of Carolina goalie Cam Ward. When he arrived at the Capitals bench, he was greeted with high fives and smiles.

Its fun, Ovechkin said. I didnt see him celebrate like crazy. But hes a great player. He has unbelievable skill and you can see how easy he puts the puck in the net.

Eakin did a TV interview and two different sets of interviews with reporters pre- and post-shaving cream before having a chance to check his cell phone for messages.

Youve seen what Ive been up to, Eakin said when asked if hed checked his phone. My eyes are burning a little bit. They got me good. Eyes wide open.
