In what can only be classified as the most encouraging news of the season, Capitals defenseman Mike Green skated for more than an hour on Monday at Kettler Capitals Iceplex and could be a week away from returning to the lineup.
Green underwent surgery to repair a sports hernia on Jan. 17 and was told he would need four to six weeks of rest and rehab before returning to game action. Tuesday marks the four-week anniversary of Greens surgery, and there is a very good chance the 26-year-old defenseman will join the Caps on their four-game road trip that takes them to Florida, Tampa, Carolina and Ottawa.
Thats good, Capitals coach Dale Hunter said of Greens long practice. Hes feeling better every day. Hes right on schedule, but it takes time.
Green has played just 10 games this season and has not seen game action since Jan. 7 in San Jose. Less than a week later, a small tear was discovered in Greens abdominal wall and he underwent surgery in St. Louis.
Green has alternated time on the ice and in the weight room and could be back in the lineup as early as a week from tonight in Carolina., one week before the NHL trade deadline.
