EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. It was not a good week for Oshiomogho Atogwe or for DeAngelo Hall.Atogwe played about a dozen snaps against the Patriots after it was learned that DeJon Gomes and Reid Doughty would start at safety for the rest of the season it looked like he would spend the last three games on the bench.Hall was under fire for watching as Gomes and Doughty struggled to bring down the Patriots Rob Gronkowski. The big tight end got away for a big play. Later in the game, Hall compounded committing defensive holding by throwing the flag again, costing his team another 15 yards.
Atogwe spoke to the media during the week with brave optimism. Hall chose not to talk. Their play and the results on the scoreboard spoke volumes for both players on Sunday during the Redskins surprising and dominant 23-10 win over the Giants. Each of them got an interception on a good, athletic play. Atogwes came in the second quarter with the Redskins holding a 10-0 lead. London Fletcher deflected Eli Mannings long pass and Atogwe made a diving interception, cradling the ball under him and then bouncing up running. He returned it 26 yards to the New York 41.I knew I had it the entire time, there was no doubt in my mind, Atogwe said. D. Hall helped me get up and he led the way.Nine plays later Darrel Young powered six yards up the middle for a touchdown and a 17-0 Redskins lead.Hall got his turn early in the third quarter with the Giants looking to make a game of it trailing 17-3. Manning went deep for Hakeem Nicks and Hall snared the pass at the Redskins 40.The guy ran a post corner and I felt like the ball was a little late, said Hall. I heard some guys on our sideline hollering ball so I turned around and was able to get my hands on it.Hall returned it to the Giants 34, setting up a Graham Gano field goal. The Redskins got a third interception early in the fourth quarter when Josh Wilson picked off Mannings pass in the corner of the end zone to spike New Yorks last serious chance of pulling off a late comeback. On Saturday, Atogwe talked to Shanahan and defensive coordinator Jim Haslett and assured them that he was feeling healthy. According to Shanahan, Atogwe has been bothered by injuries to his hamstring, knee, toe, and ankle at various times this year. Shanahan and Haslett decided to give Atogwe some more reps during the game. Gomes started the game but Atogwe went in after a few series and stayed in for most of the rest of the game.Of Hall rebounding from the barrage of criticism, Shanahan said, Youve got to look at yourself and say, hey, Ive got to play at a higher level and I think thats what he did today. You have to look at yourself and say Im going to be accountable. A lot of players played like that today.
