With Hankerson out, another receiver in?

After the Mike Shanahan made the surprising announcement that Leonard Hankersons season is over after the suffered a torn labrum in the Redskins loss to the Dolphins, the question shifts to who will take his spot on the 53-man roster. The replacement wont necessarily be another wide receiver. With Hankerson out, the Redskins have four healthy wide receivers on the roster in Jabar Gaffney, Anthony Armstrong, Terrence Austin, and David Anderson. Two other wide receivers on the roster, Niles Paul and Santana Moss, are sidelined with injuries. That is a little tight and whether or not the Redskins add another one may depend on how quickly Paul is able to get back on the field. The rookie was playing a substantial number of snaps at receiver prior to sustaining a toe injury against the 49ers. It was initially diagnosed as a one- to two-week injury so if he can get back in that time frame they should be good. If it looks like they will be without Paul longer, they may want to sign another receiver. The only wide receiver currently on the practice squad is Aldrick Robinson, who was a sixth-round pick in this years draft. He has good speed but in training camp it looked like he was a long way from being ready to play in games. The Redskins released Donte Stallworth last week and if they decide to go the veteran receiver route they could go back to him. There are a few other veterans out there such as Bernard Berrian and Terrell Owens but at this point in the season it might make more sense to go with someone who knows the offense (and doesnt have the baggage of a guy like Owens). If Paul is going to be back soon they may use to roster spot to fill another position. They are thin at defensive end as Kedric Golstons knee injury probably will keep him out for at least a few weeks. Kentwan Balmer, the former first-round pick who the Redskins picked up last week, will take Golstons spot in the line rotation. But more depth may be needed there so the Redskins could be targeting someone for that position. However, the Redskins usually keep only three ends active on game days and they have Doug Worthington on the practice squad so they might run with the three ends on the roster figuring that they can call up Worthington if necessary.
