In a surprising move, the Washington Mystics have hired assistant Trudi Lacey as the team's new coach and general manager after failing to reach a contractual agreement with now former coach Julie Plank. Former GM Angela Taylor's contract also was not renewed after a 22-12 season and a second straight trip to the WNBA playoffs which ended in a first round sweep at the hands of Atlanta.

Lacey has been on the the Mystics coaching staff since 2009 as an assistant coach and then was promoted to director of basketball operations in 2010. "I would like to thank Ted Leonsis, Sheila Johnson and the entire Mystics organization for the opportunity to coach an extraordinary group of young ladies in front of the best fans in the WNBA, said Lacey. We will continue to work hard to continue to build on the success of the past two seasons."

Mystics President and Managing Partner Sheila Johnson cited the move as strictly a business decision. "We were in discussion with Julie about a jointgmcoachrole aswell as our philosophy moving forward.Julie only wanted to coach the team andboth sides agreed to part ways," Johnson said. All of us are excited to begin 2011. Our franchise is 100 committed to taking the next step, and we are excited to have our fans take it with us," said Johnson.
