I spent Wednesday in suburban Baltimore helping out on CSNs coverage of this weekends Ravens-Patriots game for the AFC title. One of the angles I am pursuing is how different New England is since the Ravens routed the Patriots in the playoffs two years ago. And it was quite revealing. With that in mind, I looked at the four conference finalists and, of course, the Redskins, to see what kind of roster turnover theyve had since the end of the 2009 season. The results (includes players currently on the 53-man roster and not those on injured reserve, practice squad or suspended list):RAVENSTurnover: 29 of 53.Starters: Nine.Big additions: WR Anquan Boldin, TE Ed Dickson, TE Dennis Pitta, FB Vonta Leach, LT Bryant McKinnie, S Bernard Pollard, WR Torrey Smith.Analysis: The Ravens have been willing to make trades for Boldin and WR Lee Evans, rely on DicksonPitta and release veteran Todd Heap or go the veteranless expensive route with veterans like Pollard, RB Ricky Williams, reserve OL Andre Gurode, etc.PATRIOTSTurnover: 33 of 53.Starters: 10 (plus P Zoltan Mesko).Big additions: TE Rob Gronkowski, TE Aaron Hernandez, CB Devin McCourty, LB Brandon Spikes and Mesko from the fantastic 2010 draft. Veterans in WR Deion Branch, OG Brian Waters and DE Shaun Ellis.Analysis: The Patriots struck out with old friend Albert Haynesworth and WR Chad Ochocinco hasnt done much. But getting Gronkowski and Hernandez post-first round was a big score.GIANTSTurnover: 30 of 53.Starters: Five.Analysis: The Giants spent the last two off-seasons adding draft picks and free agents to build the teams depth, as shown by the lack of new starters. No rookies are listed on the teams first-team depth chart. The big new starters are WR Victor Cruz and S Antrel Rolle.49ERSTurnover: 30 of 53.Starters: Six (plus K David Akers).Analysis: The 2010 draft has been a boon starting OL Anthony Davis and Mike Iupati and All-Pro LB Navarro Bowman (plus a draft-weekend trade for Ted Ginn, Jr.). Post-lockout, the Niners added CB Carlos Rogers, K David Akers and FB Bruce Miller. They also drafted Aldon Smith.REDSKINSTurnover: 38 of 53.Starters: 13 (plus P Sav Rocca).Analysis: Of the teams, the Redskins had the most starters not counted among this group because they were on injured reserve or suspended. But this is still a ton of change. The bakers dozen of new Week 17 starters -- Grossman, Paulsen, Gaffney, Chester, Helu and Hurt; defense Riley, Carriker, Atogwe, Bowen, Cofield, Wilson and Kerrigan.Contact OHalloran at firstname.lastname@example.org
