Karl Alzner has played on championship teams before, twice with the AHLs Hershey Bears and twice with Team Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships.
On Wednesday, the Capitals defenseman appeared on TSN Radio in Toronto and told host James Cybulski that the mood around this years Caps team is a similar feel to the teams hes won with before.
Were very close, Alzner said of the makeup of the Caps locker room. Some of the new guys that we brought in said that they cant believe how we kind of go at each other and how we kind of chirp at each other. But I think that brings everyone close together, nobody takes anything personal, everyone airs out any dirty laundry and there are no secrets on our team.
Ive never been on a team like this and I think thats really good and really important. Everyone is having a good time right now and I think thats definitely one of the keys to success. Ive been fortunate enough to be on a few teams that have won and they all seem to be very similar to what we have right now.
Alzner also discussed the Caps 4-3 double overtime win in Game 4 and called the teams veteran leadership crucial to that comeback win.
I think it was just guys realizing that we have a great opportunity here and we cant just go ahead and squander it away, Alzner said. We know that we cant let this fall by the wayside. This doesnt come along all that often, when you have a team that is as skilled as we have right now and everyone is starting to realize that right now.
We had guys step up and say some things between the second and third periods of Game 4 just about this being our time and that we have to really decide right now if we want to show what kind of team we are and really put things together and make a run for it.
