A brilliant man once said, Theres no reason to go to Nationals games next year. A slightly smarter woman gave me a few reasons why I was wrong. The problem is
A. I just blew my own cover
B. She (my girlfriend) knows next to nothing about baseball.
Now, quite a few Nats fans barked at me when I mentioned on both my radio shows that there arent going to be many reasons to go to a Nationals game next year given the chances that 2011 will be Strasburg-less. It seems like next year will be another loss-filled season of the same-old, same-old.
But back to my talk with a certain young lady. She wants her real name concealed, so lets call her by her code name Delicious (boy, shes gonna kill me). Heres an informal transcript of our recent conversation:
Me: Theres no reason to go to Nats games next season. Theyll lose another 90-100 games. They lack star power, have a dry free agent class to choose from and Strasburg will pitch very little, if any at all.
Delicious: What about Bryce Harper? Hell be there.
Me: Not until 2012 at the soonest.
Delicious: Why did they give him all that money if hes not going to play now?
Me: Because. Just because. That and he needs time to season his craft in the minors.
Delicious: Id pay to see Adam Dunn play.
Me: No, you wouldnt. You havent even been to a game this year. Dunn might not be back next year either.
Delicious: Well that Nigel Morgan, hes a pistol!
Me: You mean Nyjer? Not so sure hell be around either.
Delicious: What if they are good like that Padres team you were talking about?
Me: Good point. Thats possible but not probable. A winning product with Ryan Zimmerman and a bunch of no-names MIGHT fill the seats, but this years Padres are an aberration.
Delicious: Not that Im that interested in this conversation any more, but why are they an aberration?
Me: Youll have to depend on young guys like Jordan Zimmermann and Ross Detwiler to win 28-30 games next year, like San Diego has gotten with young guys named Mat Latos and Clayton Richard. The Nationals' defense has been consistently atrocious, and the Padres have the best bullpen in baseball. Again, this is all possible, but definitely not probable.
Delicious: Hmm. Didnt you say that before you met me you used to love hanging out at the ballpark, drinking beer and picking up beautiful women?
Me: Good point.
She always seems to win.
2011 shows promise.
