When his Achilles injury kept LaRon Landry out of the Redskins Week 11 game against Dallas, rookie DeJon Gomes got the start in Landrys strong safety spot. Gomes played 71 of the 74 snaps and did not make any obvious errors. Last week Landry missed another game, this time with a groin injury. This time, however, Reed Doughty started. Gomes played only 11 snaps. He did go out with a knee injury in the second quarter but he played snaps after halftime and it appears he was able to play. Landry has been ruled out of this Sundays game, again with the groin. It is expected that Doughty will start. Thats OK, but I certainly would like to see Gomes get more than some token action. I have a higher opinion of Doughty than do many fans with whom I interact but the fact is that he is about as good as he is ever going to get. If they need him to fill in at safety in 2012 he will be ready to go and he will play no better or worse than he will play this Sunday. Gomes, on the other hand, needs the game experience. If Landry leaves as a free agent in the spring or if Gomes has to step into the lineup for any other reason, he needs the reps. You cant replace regular season game action when it comes to preparation for more regular season games. Im not for emptying the bench once your team is out of the playoffs. They still should play to win games. But putting in Gomes is not like pulling someone off of the practice squad to put into the starting lineup. He has shown that the moment is not too big for him. While he has a lot to work on, he wont be an obvious weak spot that the other team will be able to exploit. What do you think? Should Gomes play more?
With Landry out, Gomes should play
