UPDATED 4:36 p.m.
Despite throwing four interceptions Sunday, moving his season total to a league-high nine, Redskins quarterback Rex Grossman still has the support of several veterans, including receiver Santana Moss.
Moss said Monday morning at Redskins Park that Grossman should remain the starter even though he was replaced by John Beck in the 20-13 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Youre going to throw picks and fumble footballs, Moss said. As an offense, we have to be able to go out there and give Grossman a better chance. You cant put it on him. Yes, he threw the ball. Yes, he got the blame. But as an offensive core, we have to make better plays so he wont have to deal with this kind of stuff.
Grossman got the gate after going 9-for 22 passing for 143 yards, and his 23.7 rating was tied for the second-worst of his career when having more than 10 attempts.
During his afternoon news conference, coach Mike Shanahan declined to name a starter for next weeks game at Carolina.
Well go through it Wednesday, he said. Were going to play the people that give us the best chance to win, and thats based on practices, games, our gut.
I have not made up my mind right now. I have talked to our coaches, but just to get their opinions.
If Beck starts, he would become the 13th different quarterback since 2000 to start a game for the Redskins, further confirmation the franchise has been the opposite of stable. If Grossman starts, he would try to rebound, but Moss has seen enough during the Redskins 3-2 start.
No question, he said. Thats not even something that should be asked.
It was asked and should be asked after Grossmans passer rating continues to plummet (66.5) as the turnovers (11) mount.
I feel like for the flow game yesterday, switching worked and we got a spark by bringing Beck in, Moss said. But you cant just give up on a guy after one bad outing.
Asked to respond to Moss comments, Shanahan said: You want your players to support all their teammates regardless of if theyre first-, second- or third-team.
Shanahan said he thought about yanking Grossman after the third interception but weighed who was at fault. That statement would lead one to believe Shanahan thinks tight end Fred Davis should run a crisper route.
Where Moss thoughts will be criticized is saying Grossman has experienced one bad game.
Grossman threw two interceptions inside Arizona territory in Week 2. Any chance for a comeback at Dallas ended when he was stripped in the last minute. Two more interceptions, albeit one went through Moss hands, let St. Louis back in the game.
And then the Philadelphia debacle.
Grossman completed more passes to Eagles safety Kurt Coleman (three) than all but two Redskins offensive players.
Beck entered early in the fourth quarter and was 8-of-15 passing for 117 yards and a 4-yard touchdown run.
Yes, it did spark the offense, right tackle Jammal Brown said. He came in really confident and was ready to go. That gave us a little oomph. The things Rex did, guys were kind of down after the turnovers, not saying it was his fault. It takes the air out of you.
Beck directed the Redskins only touchdown drive in his first regular-season action in four years and was clearly more mobile behind the teams patchwork offensive line.
Its always a big difference when you have a mobile quarterback, Brown said. He can make things happen with his feet and wait for the coverage to break down.
Grossman and Beck werent made available to the media during the open locker room period. During training camp, Shanahan said he would stake his reputation on having faith in the two quarterbacks. That continued publicly on Monday.
I believe in both these guys; both these guys can play, Shanahan said. Ive been around quarterbacks in the National Football League for a long time, and I know these guys have what it takes. Both guys, Im hoping, are going to be here for a long time.
