The Redskins will be without half their starting secondary Sunday when they play at the New York Giants.

Coach Mike Shanahan officially ruled safety LaRon Landry (Achilles) and cornerback Carlos Rogers (hamstring) out after they did not practice Friday at Redskin Park.

Landry will miss a third consecutive game and be replaced by Reed Doughty; Rogers will miss his second game in three weeks he has sustained injuries to both hamstrings. Phillip Buchanon will start and Kevin Barnes will see time as the nickel cornerback.

Anytime you lose great players, obviously it hurts you, but it gives other people opportunities and you get to see what they can do, Shanahan said.

Shanahan said Landry is not yet a candidate to be placed on the season-ending injured reserve list.

If we didnt think he would be able to play, we would IR him, he said. But theres hope. Hopefully its sooner rather than later.

Left tackle Trent Williams returned to practice after missing Thursday with a shoulder problem.

Shanahan did not rule out running back Ryan Torain, out the last three games with a hamstring injury.

He got some reps in there but hes still not 100 percent but getting better, Shanahan said. Well do the same thing we have done try to work him out pretty good before the game and see how hes doing.

A whopping 14 of the Redskins 53 players are listed as questionable: Torain, Williams, linebackers Lorenzo Alexander (hamstring) and Brian Orakpo (ankle), receivers Brandon Banks (knee), Santana Moss (knee) and Roydell Williams (foot), guards Derrick Dockery (knee) and Artis Hicks (thigh), defensive linemen Albert Haynesworth (illness), Jeremy Jarmon (hamstring) and Kedric Golston (elbowgroin), safety Kareem Moore (knee) and center Casey Rabach (knee).

The Giants, meanwhile, will be without receiver Hakeem Nicks (leg), left tackle Shawn Andrews (back) and returner Will Blackmon (chest). Receiver Steve Smith (pectoral) is listed as doubtful and not expected to play.
