If a decision has been made to replace him, Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb hopes he would be one of the first to know.
Thats professionalism, he said. Thats communication.
Amid a report the Redskins could use Rex Grossman at some point over the final three games, McNabb said he expects to start Sunday at Dallas.
I cant afford to worry about the speculation, he said. If I dont get that from the guy who makes the decisions, I dont focus on it.
Coach Mike Shanahan was his typical non-revealing self after practice.
Were not committing to tell you who the starters are at any position, he said. Theyve got to get ready for a couple of players. Thats good for us.
Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said his team is preparing as if McNabb will start and play the whole game.
And if he happens not to be the quarterback, well have to make those adjustments, Garrett said.
The latest McNabb-Shanahan drama comes after the quarterbacks first game without an interception since Week 2 (although Tampa Bay dropped at least two picks) and his second-highest passing rating game (100.7).
McNabb maintained hes fine physically after struggling with hamstring injuries at midseason but he hasnt done much scrambling he doesnt have a run longer than 4 yards in the last five games.
Quarterbacks never tell you the truth, Shanahan said on Monday. He hasnt scrambled a lot. Its probably hurting a little bit more than hes indicating but the quarterbacks Ive been around will never admit to being hurt.
Shanahan would be risking plenty if he benched a still-physically-able-to-play McNabb even if it is to get an evaluation on Grossman. For starters, it wouldnt go over well in the locker room even though the 34-year old McNabb has a career-high 15 interceptions and his 77.1 rating is 25th in the league. At 5-8, hes headed toward his worst season as a full-time starter.
Hes been amazing, cornerback DeAngelo Hall said. To admire a guy from a distance and to finally get a chance to be around him, hes everything we expected. Hes a tremendous leader. We just wish we could win more games, have more talent here for him, have more everything for him because he takes the blame for so much stuff. Thats what great leaders do.
Despite the current skid 1-5 in the last six games to fall out of playoff contention McNabb said the offense has made big steps.
I look at these three games to get better, he said. When you have a mindset to go out and try to impress and do a little bit more than what youre capable of doing, it takes away from being in the framework of the scheme and what were planning on doing.
McNabb said the communication got a lot better, with offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan since his benching at Detroit.
Things can change here and it will change here, McNabb said. There were a lot of things in the beginning of the season that myself as well as maybe Kyle we werent on the same page. And now we are.
