The Capitals have changed coaches but they will not be changing captains, general manager George McPhee said on Monday, shortly after replacing Bruce Boudreau with Dale Hunter.

"That's not going to happen, we can answer that question now," McPhee said.

At least some of the blame for the Capitals' recent 3-7-1 slide has been the play of captain Alex Ovechkin, who through 21 games has eight goals and is a minus-7.

McPhee said he did not speak with Ovechkin privately before making his decision to fire Boudreau.

"I don't think this has anything to do with Alex Ovechkin," McPhee said. "I think it has everything to do with this team not playing well. The goalies aren't stopping pucks. The defense aren't getting the pucks out and the forwards aren't checking and scoring. We have a lot of players that aren't playing the way they are capbale of playing and that's why the change was made."
