Weve looked at the Redskins quarterback situation and at the Cam Newton-Steve Smith passing combo for the Panthers. Weve also talked about the Redskins running game or, more specifically, the lack thereof against the Eagles. But we havent talked much about Carolinas running game. The Panthers paid a lot of money to keep DeAngelo Williams (pictured) in Charlotte despite the usual alarms that go off when a running back reaches Williams age (28). They already have Jonathan Stewart, who is under contract through 2012.The pair has provided a pretty good one-two punch. Williams has 58 carries for 302 yards (5.2 per carry) while Stewart has kicked in 44 for 210 (4.8 per carry). Add in Newtons 47 carries, mostly scrambles but some designed, for 207 yards and you have the fifth-ranked team in rushing average (13th in total rushing yards). The Redskins rushing defense took a hit last week as LeSean McCoy rolled for 126 yards on 28 carries. They are now giving up 106 rushing yards per game (11th ranked) and 4.6 yards per carry (21st).It seems to be almost a given that Newton and Smith will make a few big plays as they have connected on 20 plays of 20 yards or more this year. The Redskins can survive that but if Stewart and Williams get clicking and are tearing off five yards a carry, it could be a long day for the Redskins in Bank of America Stadium.
