Richard Quinn was on his way to join the Redskins last Thursday when the team called to tell him the tight ends services wouldnt be needed for another few days.
Quinn and his fiance were already on the road so they made a U-turn in Stony Creek, Va., about 45 miles south of Richmond on Interstate 95 and returned to Fayetteville, N.C.
Quinn drove back earlier this week when he signed with the Redskins, replacing defensive lineman Chris Baker on the 53-man roster.
I got the call Thursday and I was excited but it ended up getting switched so I went back to North Carolina to continue working out and staying in shape until it was actually time to sign, Quinn said Wednesday before his first practice.
The Redskins are in need of tight end help after reserve Mike Sellers injured his elbow against New England. Dominique Byrd was re-signed last week to back up Logan Paulsen.
Quinn wasnt worried at all, last week the Redskins would back out of their verbal agreement. He worked out for the team last month but was not signed.
Quinn said he has been working out for teams throughout the seasons second half.
Just traveling, he said. Ive had a lot of phone calls from a lot of teams to try out, been to eight or nine different teams in a seven-week period. I was on the road every week.
Thats just part of the process. Of course youre excited and want to get back to work but you have to be patient.
Quinn has been on the market since reaching an injury settlement with Denver in late August, two weeks after he sustained an MCL injury. It was just two-plus years ago then-coach Josh McDaniels traded into the second rounds final pick to take Quinn, who played at North Carolina.
In 29 games for the Broncos, he had one catch (thrown by Tim Tebow) and no touchdowns.
I liked him as a blocker, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said. I thought he was a dominating blocker coming out of college. I was very impressed with the way he moved defensive linemen and linebackers off the line of scrimmage. Well get a chance to evaluate him and see how he helps our football team.
And a chance is what Quinn wants.
The opportunity is here, he said. I want to show them everything I can during this period of time I have.
