MOBILE, Ala. As if the large equipment truck with theRedskins logo wasnt a giveaway, much of the organization from Mike Shanahanto the scouting staff, to the assistant coaches to the training staff havearrived in southern Alabama for this weeks Senior Bowl. After not even attending last years game and giving noindication last month he was going to do so this year, Shanahan agreed to coachthe South squad in Saturdays 3 p.m. all-star game. Minnesotas staff willcoach the North team. The North-South designations are pretty much accurate theonly South player is Illinois offensive lineman Jeff Allen. The first big event of this week is later this morning atthe National Scouting Weigh-In, where teams can get an honest measurement ofthe draft prospects. Both teams will have one practice per day fromMonday-Thursday.A couple of mid-morning thoughts:1. Obviously Shanahan agreeing to coach which he has neverdone as a head coach before shows the importance the Redskins are putting onthe draft. They have a very valuable pick at No. 6 and could use that to tradedown like last year to accumulate assets for a team that still needs depth atseparate spots.2. All of the practices are open to the media and public soit will be interesting to see how hands-on Shanahan is with South teamquarterbacks Brandon Weeden of Oklahoma State, Nick Foles of Arizona and SanDiego States Ryan Lindley.3. Couple guys that jump out on the South roster becausethey would fill a Redskins need: Arizona receiver Juron Criner (6-foot-4, 215pounds) and North Carolina receiver Dwight Jones (6-4, 225). Along theoffensive line, Alabama center William Vlachos, who started for two nationalchampionship teams.4. There are no Maryland or Virginia Tech seniors in thegame. Virginia is represented by linebacker Cam Johnson. There are 21Southeastern Conference players on the South squad.5. There is talent on the field. As one Redskins coach toldme last month, the Senior Bowl is valuable because you know that all of themwill be drafted. Last years game featured Von Miller, Jake Locker andChristian Ponder. Of course, the star power that is Robert Griffin III, AndrewLuck and Ryan Kalil arent eligible to play.Contact OHalloran at rohalloran@comcastsportsnet.com
